About The Exhibition

STPI Singapore presents STPI in Kyoto: Beyond Print and Paper, an exhibition celebrating the spirit of collaboration between esteemed artists with STPI’s specialist printmakers and papermakers. This unique pop up running from 7 to 12 November 2026 at the Kyoto City University of Arts (KCUA), is held in parallel to STPI’s return participation at Art Collaboration Kyoto (ACK), one of Japan’s leading international contemporary art fairs, from 7 to 9 November.

Both presentations are timely amidst Singapore and Japan marking 60 years of bilateral ties, and underscore STPI’s enduring commitment to the Japanese art world with over two decades of deep artistic exchange, fortifying an important key in STPI’s wider international practice.

今回の展覧会では、束芋(2008年)、金氏徹平(2013年)、大竹伸朗(2015年)、Lee Bul(イ・ブル/李昢|韓国)、Do Ho Suh(ソ・ドホ/徐道濩|韓国)、Haegue Yang(ヤン・ヘギュ/梁慧圭|韓国)、Heman Chong(ヒーマン・チョン/張奕滿|シンガポール)など、これまでVAPに参加した14名のアーティストがSTPIで生み出した作品を紹介します。

Introducing Japanese art audiences to the world of the STPI Workshop, the STPI in Kyoto exhibition brings to fore its prestigious Visiting Artist Programme (VAP), where international artists are invited to work closely with STPI’s print and paper specialists to push the physical and conceptual possibilities of these mediums. While STPI’s engagement with Japanese artists began in 2006, on this occasion, distinct works from collaborations with Tabaimo in 2008, Teppei Kaneuji in 2013, and Shinro Ohtake in 2015 will feature alongside those of Yanyun Chen, Heman Chong, Genevieve Chua, Han Sai Por, Charles Lim Yi Yong, Zul Mahmod, and Suzann Victor (Singapore); Lee Bul, Do Ho Suh, and Haegue Yang (South Korea), and Angela Bulloch (Canada).

“It’s a pleasure to reunite with STPI, on occasion of this milestone exhibition at my alma mater, the Kyoto City University of Arts, in my home city of Kyoto. Seeing familiar faces from my residency with the STPI Workshop is like a reunion with old friends and reminds me of the spirit and vitality of our exchanges in artmaking. I look forward to sharing this same energy with my art peers and audiences at STPI in Kyoto.”
Teppei Kaneuji, Artist

Across traditional printmaking methods and experimental approaches to paper, the exhibition spotlights core techniques and processes at the heart of the STPI Workshop, such as intaglio, relief printing, lithography, screenprint, and papermaking. The showcase is significant in the context of Kyoto, nodding to KCUA’s longstanding printmaking department and a shared affinity with the culture of craftsmanship and material mastery rooted in the city’s heritage.

From a broader perspective, Japan’s rich history of hanga, from ukiyo-e to the Shin-hanga and Sōsaku-hanga movements, and its washi papermaking traditions, provide a natural springboard for STPI’s innovative approach to print and paper, combining technical prowess with a creative impulse to continually test their material boundaries.

STPI in Kyoto: Beyond Print and Paper will also be accompanied by an exciting series of public programmes throughout the exhibition, including artist talks and KCUA student-led workshops, offering abundant opportunities for exchange between artists, practitioners, and the next generation of makers.

Concurrently at ACK, STPI and Mizuma Gallery will present a group showcase featuring prominent artists O JUN, Junichi Mori, Kim Lim and Heman Chong. Through the two presentations, STPI highlights its own driving ethos of collaboration during Kyoto’s annual art moment, connecting STPI in Singapore with artists, students, institutions and collectors in Japan and beyond.
