판화와 종이를 기반으로 동시대 미술의 새로운 가능성을 확장해온 싱가포르의 STPI가 프리즈 서울 2026에서 한국을 대표하는 세계적인 작가 서도호의 신작으로 구성된 솔로 부스를 선보인다. 이번 전시부스는 국립현대미술관(MMCA)에서 열리는 서도호의 대규모 개인전과 맞물려 진행되며, 약 20년에 걸쳐 이어져 온 서도호와 STPI의 창의적 협업의 최신 결실을 조명한다.

국립현대미술관에서 열리는 이번 전시에는 서도호가 STPI 레지던시를 통해 발전시킨 주요 작품들이 다수 포함된다. 이는 판화와 종이를 매개로 한 작가의 작업에서 STPI의 중요한 역할을 보여준다. 이와 함께 STPI는 전시 개막 주말 동안 공공 프로그램을 마련해, 오랜 시간 지속되어 온 두 주체의 협업 과정과 그 안에서 이루어진 창작적 교류를 관객에게 보다 가까이 소개할 예정이다.

천을 활용한 몰입형 설치와 조각 작업으로 세계적인 주목을 받아온 서도호는 자신이 거주했던 공간을 정교하게 재해석하며 집과 기억, 이주(displacement)의 개념을 탐구해왔다. 테이트 모던(2025), 아트선재센터(2024), 스코틀랜드 국립미술관(2022) 등에서 열린 주요 전시는 오늘날 가장 중요한 동시대 미술가 중 한 명으로서 그의 위상을 다시 한번 보여주었다.

2009년 STPI 레지던시에서 실 드로잉(Thread drawing)에 대한 초기 실험을 시작한 이래, STPI가 오랜 시간 축적해온 혁신의 전통은 서도호의 판화와 종이를 매개로 한 작업을 형성해왔으며, 이를 통해 기존의 한계를 넘어서는 다채로운 작업으로 이어졌다. STPI 워크숍의 정교한 기술력과 전문성을 바탕으로, 서도호는 덧없음(transience)과 그리움(longing)이라는 개념을 작품 안에 응축해내기 위한 새로운 접근 방식을 지속적으로 탐구하고 있으며, 이러한 작품들은 세계 주요 미술기관의 전시에서 꾸준히 소개되어 왔다.

에미 유(Emi Eu), STPI 총괄 디렉터(Executive Director)는 “서도호와 STPI의 협업은 언제나 호기심과 소재가 지닌 기존의 한계를 넘어보려는 의지에서 출발해 왔습니다. 서도호는 대형 패브릭 설치 작업으로 국제적으로 잘 알려져 있지만, STPI는 그가 판화와 종이라는 매체를 통해 자신의 조형 언어를 새롭게 확장해 나가는 중요한 실험의 장이 되어 왔습니다. 서도호의 탁월한 예술적 여정이 서울 전역에서 조명되고 있는 이 시점에, 이번 신작들을 서울에서 선보일 수 있어 매우 뜻깊게 생각합니다” 라고 말했다.

국립현대미술관의 대규모 개인전에 이어 진행되는 STPI의 프리즈 서울 솔로 부스에서는 서도호가 2026년 STPI 레지던시에서 작업한 새로운 실 드로잉 작품들을 처음 공개한다. 주요 작품으로는 대형 작품 〈Breathing Home〉(2025)과 〈Haunting Home〉(2026)을 비롯해, 보다 내밀한 규모로 전개되는 새로운 연작 〈Spectators〉 (2026) 등이 포함된다.

STPI returns to Frieze Seoul 2026 with a solo booth of new works by renowned Korean artist Do Ho Suh, coinciding with his major retrospective at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA). The presentation marks the latest chapter in a creative collaboration between Do Ho Suh and STPI, spanning almost 20 years.

MMCA's retrospective features a significant number of works developed during Suh's residencies at STPI, the result of the institution's pivotal role in his print and paper works. Moreover, STPI will present a series of public programmes during the exhibition's opening weekend, offering audiences rare insight into the creative exchanges behind this enduring partnership.

Known internationally for his immersive fabric installations and sculptures, Suh's practice explores ideas of home, memory and displacement through meticulous reconstructions of spaces he has inhabited. Recent major exhibitions at Tate Modern (2025), Art Sonje Center (2024) and National Galleries Scotland (2022) have reaffirmed his position as one of the most significant contemporary artists today.

From his early experiments in thread drawings during his residency in 2009, STPI’s legacy of innovation has shaped Suh’s print and paper practice, culminating in a diverse body of work which transcends the limits. Supported by the technical rigour and expertise of the Workshop at STPI, Suh continues to formulate new approaches to distil ideas of transience and longing in his works, which have been featured prominently in institutional shows around the world.

In parallel with MMCA's major exhibition of the artist, STPI's solo presentation at Frieze Seoul will debut a selection of new thread drawings created during Suh's 2026 residency. Highlights include the monumental works Breathing Home (2025) and Haunting Home (2026), alongside Spectators (2026), a new body of intimate works.
