About The Exhibition

The possible mutation of a print within and beyond itself may well be the promise of the medium’s tireless, and perhaps transcendental, process. As form is achieved through a series of methods, so is its presence assured through continuous reception beyond the site in which it is crafted. It is as if the strain, if not the rigour, of discipline enables the quickness of unpredictable encounters with an ever-emerging form. This tension is a source of wonder and expectation, but also of the difficulty with which to make sense of how the form comes to being and modifies in various incarnations. This difficult, plural forming is therefore the print’s always exciting becoming.

This exhibition is organised by two institutions in the Philippines and Singapore committed to the diligent exploration of art forms and their potential. Such a commitment speaks to the desires of both the modern and the contemporary. To be modern and contemporary is to be acutely aware of the moment of production in time and in the same vein to reflect on, and even breach, the limits of this consciousness of time. Bound by the diplomatic relations between the two countries and the shared vision to enhance the artistic ecologies of Southeast Asian art, The Metropolitan Museum of Manila, or The M, and STPI, along with the Singapore Embassy in Manila, initiate this project to commemorate but also to chart new paths for collaboration.
