Udomsak Krisanamis (b. 1966, Bangkok, Thailand, based in Chiangmai, Thailand) is known for his bold collage paintings that incorporate found materials and everyday objects. Regarded as a leading practitioner in the Thai contemporary art scene, his work explores how painting can function as a sensory experience for viewers through dense layers, intricate textures and optical effects.

Krisanamis taught himself English by reading the daily papers when he first moved to the United States in the early 1990s, striking off words he knew. This system gradually produced fields of redacted lines, punctuated by circles around the occasional new word—a gridded pattern that would form the basis for his collages. These grids feature prominently in the artist’s earlier works, resembling satellite images, cityscapes and circuit boards all at once. They are often created from layers of newsprint, paint and cellophane noodles, with the latter enriching his compositions with its shimmery surface. In more recent immersive installation works, he experiments with gestural strokes of bright monochrome colours and an expanded range of found objects, including yoga mats, plywood and ping pong tables.

Krisanamis obtained his BFA at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok in 1989, and his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1993. His work is found in numerous collections including the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Cartier Foundation, Paris; and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Torino.

Notable solo exhibitions include Somewhere Only I Know (2022), Art Center Silpakorn University, Bangkok; A Retrospective Re-Presentation (2019), Bangkok University Gallery; A Retrospective (2016), Chiang Mai University Art Museum; Thai Charisma (2014) Bangkok Art & Culture Centre; A Mindful Mission (2011) Kunstverein Freiburg; Udomsak Krisanamis (2003), Kunsthalle Basel; and The Intimate Portrait (2000), Wexner Centre for the Arts, Columbus.
