STPI invites around 6 international artists annually for residencies, where they can explore new ideas and experiment with different print- and papermaking techniques. This had resulted in works as diverse and ‘paper-pulp’ paintings, paper assemblage and unique mixed media works. |

Hong Kong based artist, Wilson Shieh works in the traditional Chinese gongbi style, an ancient method of ornate fine-brush painting that requires high technical ability. Instead of typical subjects like birds, flowers and pretty landscapes, he renders subjects from daily life.
Shieh residency at STPI takes place in July 2008, where he will be working on a set of prints based on his favourite body of work, ‘The Musical Families’. Taking it a pitch higher, Shieh employs the traditional Japanese print technique, Ukiyo-e to translate the fine quality of his drawings in print. STPI had specially brought in from Japan, Ukiyo-e woodblock carver, Kitamura Shoichi, for the realization this project. This creative endevour, combining traditional craft and contemporary form will reach a new epiphany when the exhibition opens at STPI, in 2009.
